QLOCKTWO is a German design and art brand based in Schwäbisch Gmünd. It was founded by artists Marco Biegert and Andreas Funk, who spent many years exploring how time could be made tangible beyond traditional clock faces and digital displays. In 2009, this led to the creation of the first QLOCKTWO time object with its characteristic display in words.
The basic principle is as simple as it is distinctive: Behind a square front panel lies a matrix of letters. Individual letters light up to form sentences such as “It’s five to half past seven.” This means the time isn’t displayed in a frantic, second-by-second manner, but rather in a form that corresponds to natural language and human perception.
The original "Word Clock" is now known as QLOCKTWO EARTH renamed. The former designations TOUCH, CLASSIC, and LARGE were renamed according to their actual dimensions in EARTH 13.5, EARTH 45 and EARTH 90 renamed. The numbers refer to the size of the square objects in centimeters.
The compact EARTH 13.5 It measures 13.5 × 13.5 cm and can be used as a tabletop or wall-mounted piece. It is available, among other options, as a colored PURE Edition, a Steel Series, and in elaborately finished Creator’s Editions. These include finishes made of brushed stainless steel, deep black-coated metal, hand-rusted raw steel, patinated copper, as well as versions finished in white or fine gold.
The larger EARTH 45 is the classic format of the collection and is ideal as a striking wall piece for living spaces, offices, hotels, or public areas. The EARTH 90 applies this principle to an especially large-scale art object designed for spacious rooms and architecturally sophisticated installations. All sizes retain the characteristic square shape and the minimalist letter matrix.
Many front covers can be replaced. This allows the appearance of the Zeitobjekt to be adapted later to new colors, materials, or interior design concepts. Depending on the edition, materials such as acrylic glass, stainless steel, raw steel, copper, gold plating, and other hand-finished surfaces are used. Minor variations in texture and color gradation are part of the unique character of these pieces, particularly in the Creator’s Editions.
The time display is available in numerous languages. In this way, QLOCKTWO recognizes that language plays a central role in how humans perceive and communicate time. The time object is thus adapted not only to the space but also to the language and cultural context.
With QLOCKTWO MOON The brand expands its exploration of time to include the phases of the moon. The art object depicts a lunar cycle in 28 recurring intervals, thereby revealing a slower, more natural form of time. Together with EARTH, MOON forms part of the QLOCKTWO UNIVERSE developed by Biegert & Funk.
The QLOCKTWO W brings the iconic word display to a wristwatch. At the push of a button, the current time appears in words; the current moon phase can also be displayed. The 38-mm unisex case is made of stainless steel and, depending on the model, is available with a black DLC coating.
All art objects are handcrafted in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The city has been known for centuries for its gold and silversmithing. This tradition of craftsmanship is particularly evident in the elaborately finished surfaces and the meticulous final assembly of the QLOCKTWO objects.
QLOCKTWO is designed for people who want to do more than just read the time—they want to be more mindful of it.
