Like many other iconic designs by Hans J. Wegner, the CH25 lounge chair is clear and simple in its distinctive shape. However, when it was introduced, Wegner caused a stir with its choice of materials for the backrest and seat. Woven paper string, a substitute for seaweed developed during World War II, had not yet been used for furniture.

However, Wegner was enthusiastic about the look of the material, its freedom from stretch and optimal durability, and generations after him were as well. The CH25 armchair remains very popular and has been in continuous production since 1950: a testament to Wegner's visionary approach. It takes a skilled craftsman 10 hours and about 400 meters of paper cord to hand-make a seat and backrest. A special technique is used that is similar to weaving and is visible on both sides of the backrest. The impressive result of this demanding process is an extraordinary chair that fascinates from all angles.

Optimal use and care

Wood :

Wood is a living, natural material and should therefore always be cleaned as gently as possible. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth ensures that the furniture always looks good and has a beautiful patina. Never use aggressive cleaning agents to clean furniture.

Solid wood furniture should not be placed near heat sources such as radiators and wood stoves or stored in unheated rooms.
Wood is a natural material and therefore no two pieces are alike. Small knots, visible growth spots and color variations are part of the natural appearance of wood. The parts of a piece of furniture are always assembled according to color and structure so that the piece of furniture is beautiful and complete.

Paper cord

The paper cords used at Carl Hansen & Søn are made from sustainable, FSC-certified materials. We use two different colors of paper cords: natural and black. The natural paper cord is made from unbleached paper while the black cord is dyed.

Normal cleaning and maintenance
Paper cord typically requires little or no maintenance as the durable paper cord is designed to last for years. If you want to clean the seat, you can wipe it with a well-wrung soft cloth and a neutral, colorless soap solution. It is not recommended to do this too often as it may cause unnecessary wear and tear on the paper cord. The paper cord has a thin layer of wax that prevents staining. However, discoloration of the paper cord can occur if strong liquids, e.g. E.g. red wine, fruit juice or strongly colored food can be spilled on the cord.
